Jake Shimabukuro
１９７６年、ハワイ・オアフ島生まれ。
１９９８年 PURE HEARTのメンバーとしてデビュー。
翌９９年、アルバム「Pure Heart｣がハワイのグラミー賞と称されるナ・ホク・ハノハノ・アウォーズで、新人賞や最優秀アルバム賞を含む主要４部門を受賞。
０２年にソロ・アーティストとしての活動をスタート。２００６年、邦画「フラガール」サウンドトラック担当。

こっちのウクレレって以前ショップに持ってきたのと一緒ですか？

 

This is not the one you brought to the shop, is it?

JAKE

一緒です

 

This is, yeah

LEO

これでしたっけ？

 

That’s the same one?

JAKE

そうですね、コアの、カーリー・コアのウクレレですね。この隣のは新しく出来たウクレレで、まだ慣らしている途中だから演奏はしてないです（ウクレレを手に取り、リズムを変えながら弾く）。新しい方のウクレレはまだ音が細いんですね。今使っているウクレレと比べると、まだ音が響いてこないです

 

Yeah, the Koa, the Curly Koa. The other one (points to the ukulele next to the Curly Koa ukulele) is the newest one. I haven’t started performing with that one yet. Still breaking it in. This new one, the sound is still very thin (starts playing). Doesn’t have that deep resonance.

LEO

ウクレレを慣らすのには１年くらいかかるんですか？

 

And you said it takes about a year of playing for it to reach the sound you like ?

JAKE

そうですね

 

Yeah

LEO

１年間毎日弾いて？

 

Everyday of playing ?

JAKE

毎日ただ弾くのみですね

 

Everyday of just playing

JAKE

音がまだホソイです

 

Yeah, the sound is very thin, HOSOI

KATSU

ああ

今使っているウクレレは、弾くとこういう良い音が（ポロロンと弾く）

 

This one (takes the Curly Koa ukulele) has a nice (strums a chord).

KATSU

本当だ！

 

Wow, you’re right !

JAKE

本当に違うね

 

Totally different !

JAKE

こっちは６年間毎日弾いているから。だけどこっちは、まだ出来てアタラシイ。これから毎日毎日弾かないと

 

This one I’ve been playing everyday for 6 years, but this one is still ATARASHI So, have to play play play play play

KATSU

シックスイヤーズ？

 

Six years?

JAKE

うーん、多分こっちのほうは来年くらいには演奏に使えると思います

 

Hmm. Maybe soon with this one, maybe next year, it will be ready.

KATSU

凄いね。ボディにマイクが入っているの

 

Wow, this one has box microphone

JAKE

ハイ、中にマイクが入ってます（メロディを弾く）

 

HAI、microphone inside（plays a melody）

KATSU

キレイな音、凄いキレイな音だね！

 

Beautiful sound, wow!!

JAKE

アリガトウゴザイマス

JAKE

ウクレレでクラシックも演奏もできますし、フラメンコ調 (フラメンコ調の速いリズムで弾く)も、できますよ

 

So, with ukulele you can play the classical music, or the flamenco (plays flamenco rhythm)

KATSU

あ、本当だ

 

Oh yeah

JAKE

ロックンロールも（スリー・コードロックのリズムに）

 

Or Rock’n’Roll (strums an oldies rock chord)

KATSU

本当だ！（拍手）

 

Yeah ! (claps)

JAKE

あと、たまに全然違う感じの音も弾いたりします、ウクレレでピアノの音とか（ウクレレを弾くが、ピアノに聞こえる）琴の音とか （今度は琴の音に）

 

And sometimes I like to play different sounds, like a piano sound (ukulele making a piano sound) or a koto sound (shifts to a koto sound)

LEO

本当だ！

 

Man, that’s koto sound !

KATSU

ジェイクさん、そういうのって、自分で考えて色々な音を出してるんですか？

 

Jake san, is that something you figured out yourself?

JAKE

そうですね、色んな楽器の音を聴いて、インスピレーションを得ますね

 

Yeah, I get a lot of inspiration from listening to other instruments

KATSU

先週末（７月２３日）のライヴが、ツアー最初のライヴだったんですか？

 

So, the weekend show (July 23rd) was the first show of the tour?

JAKE

そうです！あれがキックオフでした。明日千葉で公演があって、その後数週間日本を離れますが、来月また戻って来て、本格的に色々な都市をまわります

 

Yeah! That was kind of the kick-off, kick-off show of the tour. And then we have one more tomorrow in Chiba. Then I leave for few weeks, but come back next month and that’s when we kind of hit all the places.

KATSU

大変だねぇ、ツアーがスタートするのはいつだっけ？

 

Must be hard yeah? When does the tour start?

JAKE

初日は７月２３日でした、７月２３日カラ、ジュウガツヨウカマデデス

今日は本当に、まさか、ジェイクさんと対談できるなんて夢にも思わなかったんで、まだ緊張しているんですけど、どうぞよろしくお願いします。光栄です

 

You know, today, I still can’t believe that we got a chance to have this talk session, so please excuse me, I’m still nervous. It’s a real honor.

JAKE

実を言うと、僕が行く下町の小さい飲み屋さんにジェイクさんのCDがあって、息子もそれが大好きで、いつもそれを聴いているんですけど、大体、夜中の２時にそれをかけてもらって、この世のものとは思えないくらい良い気持ちになって帰るのが習慣なんです

 

There’s this bar in downtown Tokyo where we hang out all the time, and I always listen to your CD there. Right around 2 am, we listen to the CD, feel great, and then go home. That’s our habit lately.

LEO

いつも「Go For Broke」聴いていますよ

 

Yeah, we always listen to “Go for broke.”

JAKE

名曲ですよね、気分が上がるし、素晴らしい曲です

 

That song is really, incredible, It’s emotional music.

JAKE

あの曲は、日系アメリカ人の兵隊たちにインスパイアされた曲なんです

 

Yeah, that song was inspired by Japanese American soldiers

LEO

そうですよね

 

Right, right.

JAKE

コドモノトキ、彼らは僕のヒーローでした

 

When I was a child, KODOMO NO TOKI、they were my heroes.

KATSU

今、僕らは、息子と、もう一回昔の良い物とか、大変だった歴史とか、全てを含めて、勉強しながらモノ作りとか、そういうことをやっているんですけども、ジェイクさんの記事を読んでいると、本当にその国の歴史とか習慣だとかね、非常に尊敬されてやっていますよね。それが凄く印象に残っているんですよ。その辺は、本当大変でしょうね

 

For our brand, we often times create items through researching the past. Studying the history, paying tributes. Which is something I felt from reading articles of you, or listening to that particular song. Must be a hard process, but also gratifying too.

JAKE

ちゃんとしたことやっていると気持ちも良いですし、進むべき道がはっきりしてくると思います。壁にあたった時は、本当にこれで良いのかな、と見つめ直す良い機会にもなるし、あとはやっぱり自分の直感を信じてますね

 

I really believe that when you are doing the things you’re supposed to be doing, you feel good, and you kind of know you are on the path you’re supposed to be on, somehow. There are times in my life when I feel like there’s a lot of struggle and a lot of frustration, and thatﾕs when you kind of step back and you think, maybe it’s not what I’m supposed to be doing. Have to go with your gut feeling.

KATSU

ジェイクさん本当に凄いな、ってことしか言えないんだけど。この楽器でもって、子供から、災害にあった人たちや、老人とか、若い世代とか、みんなを良い気持ちにさせて元気にさせるって、俺それが凄くて、言葉で言えないくらいすごく感動しているんだけどね。凄いよ、なかなか出来ないよ。りっぱだね

 

I’m really overwhelmed by your ability to affect so many different generations with this instrument, from kids to people in their 20’s, 30’s, the older generations, from well off people to people going through rough time. Your ability to touch those numbers of people is just amazing.

LEO

それが出来る人はそういないですよね

 

Yeah, not many people can do it or even come close

KATSU

それでロッポちゃん(写真家・六本木泰彦)の写真見ていると、ジェイクさんが弾いているのを聴いているお客さんは、みんなハッピーな顔しているよね

 

Seeing the photos Mr. Roppongi took at your concert, the expressions on the audience are wonderful, everyone is so happy.
