Jake Shimabukuro
１９７６年、ハワイ・オアフ島生まれ。
１９９８年 PURE HEARTのメンバーとしてデビュー。
翌９９年、アルバム「Pure Heart｣がハワイのグラミー賞と称されるナ・ホク・ハノハノ・アウォーズで、新人賞や最優秀アルバム賞を含む主要４部門を受賞。
０２年にソロ・アーティストとしての活動をスタート。２００６年、邦画「フラガール」サウンドトラック担当。

ジェイクさんアメリカ本土でもよくやるんですか？

 

Jake san do you also perform often in mainland?

JAKE

はい、アメリカ本土では６０から８０公演です

 

Yes yes yes, I tour about 60 or 80 shows in US.

KATSU

ヨーロッパは？

 

How about Europe?

JAKE

ヨーロッパはサイキンです。２年程前からですね、ツアーを始めたのは

 

Europe is very recent, SAIKIN。Maybe 2 years ago, we started touring Europe.

KATSU

だけどジェイクさんの音楽聞いたらみんなファンになっちゃうでしょ？

 

I’m sure they immediately became your fan.

LEO

どういう反応でした？

 

How do they respond?

JAKE

とても良かったです、特にフランスとドイツはウクレレプレーヤーがたくさんいて

 

Oh, it’s amazing. France and Germany has lots of ukulele players.

LEO

あそうなの？

 

Really?

KATSU

そうなの、フランスは結構良いウクレレ屋さんがあるの

 

Yeah, there are several good ukulele shops in France.

JAKE

ウクレレへの関心はありますね。フランス行った時たくさんの若者たちにウクレレにサインしてくださいと言われました

 

Yeah, I believe cause there’s a big interest. When I went to France before, so many young kids asked me to sign their ukulele

ジェイクさん、こういう質問どう？ウクレレに関して。アメリカの映画で、結構ウクレレが良い場面に出てくる映画って知ってます？

 

How about movies? Do you recommend any movies that has ukulele scenes?

JAKE

ありますね、スティーブ・マーチン主演の「天国から落ちた男」とか、ウクレレのシーンありますよね

 

Oh, yeah, there was that Steve Martin movie, “The Jerk.” There was a ukulele scene.

KATSU

俺それ観てない！今日早速TSUTAYAに行って借りてきます！

 

Haven’t seen that! I’m going straight to the video shop after this session!

JAKE

最近結構ありますね。「ブルーバレンタイン」っていうヒット作も

 

Recently, lots of movies now use ukulele. There was a very big hit called “Blue Valentine”

日比谷シャンテで公開されてたなぁ。ジェイクさん映画のサントラはどのくらい作れてるんですか？

 

It was playing at Hibiya Chanter recently. Jake san how many movie soundtracks have you done?

JAKE

「フラガール」が最初でした。その次に日本版「サイドウェイズ」を

 

“Hula Girl” was my first Japanese movie, then there was the Japanese remake of “Sideways.”

LEO

日本版の「サイドウィエズ」って、亀山さんの作った映画

 

The Japanese remake of was produced by Kameyama san (“Honokaa Boy” producer).

KATSU

あ、大好きあれ！

JAKE

最近だとハリウッド映画、アダム・サンドラー主演の「Just Go With It」のサントラも参加しました

 

Then recently I did some music for a Hollywood film starring Adam Sandler called “Just go with it.”

LEO

JAKE

DVDが先日アメリカでリリースされました

 

The DVD just came out in the US

KATSU

プロデューサーからジェイクさんに「これ頼むよ」って来るの？

 

Do the producers approach you?

JAKE

その時によります。「フラガール」の時は自由に作らせて頂きました。「サイドウェイズ」の時は監督のアイデアに忠実に作り、アダム・サンドラーの映画は映画に合わせて作らず、レコーディングしたものを送って、向こうが曲に合わせて編集してくれました

 

It depends. Every situation is different. With “Hula Girl” they gave me lot of freedom to write and compose. But I worked very closely with the producer and the director. “Sideways” was a little different because the director had his idea already of what he wanted to I had to follow with what he wanted. With the Adam Sandler movie, I didn’t score to film at all. I just recorded the music separate, and gave it to them and they cut the film to the music.

JAKE

「Every Breath You Take」です。ポリスのカヴァーをしました。制作者のコンセプトが全編ポリスという事だったので。「Every Breath You Take」と「Bring On The Night」と「Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic」の３曲をカバーしました。「Every Breath You Take」は先方に好評でした

 

It’s “Every Breath You Take.” It’s a Police song. Their whole concept for the soundtrack was Police songs. That’s why I arranged three different Police songs. “Every Breath You Take,” “Bring On The Night,” and “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.” They really liked “Every Breath You Take” so they used it in the movie.

ジェイクさんさぁ、映画の中でさ、映画のエンディングなんかでキマるのってウクレレだよね

 

Ukulele music always works for endings you know, the final scenes.
